Train “Rovos Rail”

The most luxurious train in the world

Since its inception in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned an international reputation as a luxury train, known for the unique experiences that surround it. We invite you aboard the vintage wood-paneled carriages to discover the spectacular landscapes offered by Rovos Rail itineraries. With discreet, friendly service, fine cuisine, and a selection of South Africa’s best wines, Rovos Rail harks back to a simpler, more elegant era, embodying the timeless grace and grand romance of expeditions across the African continent. The trains accommodate up to 72 passengers in 36 elegantly decorated suites.

Each train has accommodation cars, dining cars (±42 seats), a lounge car (±26 seats), a small gift shop, a smoking lounge (±11 seats), and an observation car (±32 seats) with an outdoor balcony. Upholding the spirit of a bygone era, there are no radios or televisions onboard. The three available suite types—Pullman (7 m²), Deluxe (10 m²), and Royal (16 m²)—offer passengers privacy and comfort with double or twin beds and high-standard fittings and facilities. All suites have a private bathroom with a shower, toilet, basin, and bathtub (Royal Suite only), kettles, safes, air conditioning, linens, and toiletries, cleaned daily. There is adequate storage and small wardrobes with hangers and shelves.

Days onboard are casual yet elegant, while evening attire is more formal. On longer journeys, we enjoy themed evenings where guests may dress accordingly or opt for smart casual style.

A team of chefs is responsible for overseeing the vital task of ensuring all guest needs are met. The kitchen uses fresh local ingredients and traditional dishes. Meals are served in a single sitting in the dining cars, complemented by a selection of excellent South African wines. The bar menu is extensive, though special requests, such as French champagne, should be made in advance. Breakfast: 07:00-10:00 • Lunch: 13:00 • Tea: 16:30 • Formal Dinner: 19:30. Bar service is from 07:00 to approximately 01:00. All meals are served at these times unless otherwise noted in the itineraries.
