Arriondas

Asturias, Spain

Arriondas is located in Parres, in the eastern part of Asturias, 65 km from Oviedo. It has a population of 2,575 inhabitants. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 14°C, and rainfall throughout the year, which contributes to the undeniable natural beauty and greenery of the region.

The town is made up of five villages: Castañera, Santianes del Terron, Cuadroveña, Villar de la Peña, and the main village of Arriondas. It wasn't until the early 20th century, with the arrival of the railway, that communication improved throughout the municipality. Additionally, the return of emigrants from America spurred economic growth, particularly in the tourism sector, with one of the main activities being the International Canoe Descent of the Sella River, which typically takes place on the first Saturday after August 2nd each year.

One of the attractions in this area is Parque de la Concordia, where you can find an urban sculpture by Asturian artist Rubio Camin, made of corten steel, which has been in the park since 1986.

The Casa de la Cultura, near the town hall, houses not only a library but also an exhibition hall and an auditorium. A variety of events, such as concerts, conferences, and theater programs, are held in this venue, making it the most important cultural center in the area.

A visit to the Confiteria Campoamor building, a three-story structure combining Montañes and Baroque styles, is a must. The galleries between firewalls on the first and second floors of this building are particularly noteworthy.

In addition to the Sella Descent, some of the main festivals include the Santa Rita festivities in May, and the International Ascent to Fitu, a car race that climbs the mountain to reach its corresponding finish line and qualifies participants for mountain races in Spain and Europe.

The Fiestas del Carmen are celebrated in July in honor of the Virgin, with additional activities such as the Livestock Exhibition Contest and a grand dance in Parque de la Llera.

In terms of gastronomy, you can enjoy eel with peas, a traditional fish stew with local peas, among other dishes.
