Fromista, Palencia

Castilla y León, Spain

Frómista, capital of the Romanesque palatine, is a crossing point of the Camino de Santiago. Traces of Roman, Visigothic and even Islamic civilization have been found in this city. It will not be until the 11th century when the town reaches its greatest splendor with the construction of the Monastery of San Martín de Tours and with the special mention that Codex Calixtinus makes citing Frómista as a transit point at the end of the sixth stage of the Camino. Frómista was a place of coexistence of Christians and Jews. Later, already in the 15th century, it became a pilgrimage village, when a miracle occurred. The miracle is about Pedro Fernández de Teresa, who on his deathbed could not receive communion for not recognizing his sins (not returning money borrowed from a Jew). Frómista continued to grow with the construction of the Canal de Castilla, which allowed to sell the surplus of cereals, improve communications and promote irrigation, enriching the town. Nowadays, it is one of the indispensable transit points of the Camino de Santiago.

During its visit, the Church of San Martín de Tours, stands out above all and is considered a jewel of Romanesque architecture for the perfection of its forms and its detailed decoration. Many of its capitals, which were used to educate the population in the Faith, have not been deciphered. You can also see the Miracle Stone, located in front of the house of Pedro Fernández de Teresa. Other of its tourist attractions is the Church of San Pedro, with a Renaissance facade, neoclassical porch but interior of Gothic style. Next to the Church is the Museum with the Patena del Milagro, the relic of Saint Telmo, the sculpture of the Virgen Panadera, Ecce Homo ... It is also worth noting the Church of Santa María del Castillo (Good of Cultural Interest) with the Vestigia Museum - Legend of the Camino, among others.

As for its gastronomy, its mature sheep cheese stands out. In addition, you can also enjoy its rosca of palo, blanquillos, roasts, jijas or the famous esparceta drink, whose recipe is only known by one of the families of the town.
